View of St. Paul's Cathedral from in front of the Tate Modern. That's the Millenium bridge in the foreground stretching over the Thames River. My office, is on the opposite side of St. Paul's, on the top floor of 'The Condor House' with an unmatched bird's eye view of St. Paul's Churchyard
Inside the Tate Modern, a converted power station (can anyone pick out the overhead crane rails? Harmon Yard folks?). Now home to Modern Art, which probably takes less skill than the burning coal, but probably attracts more visitors.
Westminster Cathedral (different from Westminster Abbey).
Me, posing for a postcard. This photo was taken by a complete stranger...who then asked me if he could have doubles.
It's been one week since my arrival. I can't say I'm really settling in actually, I feel like that would indicate something along the lines of a 'routine' which I am trying to steer clear of. As you can see from the photos I spent my first weekend getting around to some of the sites, and also managed to get some things in order for my stay. One of the highlights was catching a comedy show in Oxford Circus Saturday night. There were 9 or 10 comedians and I found I would pretty much laugh in syncopation with the rest of the audience. They would laugh at the British pop culture jokes (which I didn't get) then I would laugh at their normal commentary, which sounded to me like they were just making up funny slang.
Work is going great and the folks here in the UK office are terrific. I'm working on a project that is completely new in character to my experiences thus far in NY. The SKANSKA office space, by the way is top notch. The floor space is open with lots of windows and there are many good places scattered around with couches or tables where folks can 'have a meet-up' over some tea, rather than 'have it out' which is not civilized at all....maybe all we're missing in NY is a few couches??
